The ABOHNS Announces the Election of New Leadership

Meet the new President, President-Elect, Assessments Committee Chair, Director, and Members of the Exam Council.

The American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the election of new leadership. Beginning March 12, 2022, the ABOHNS leaders introduced below have assumed their new roles.

 
Kathleen C.Y. Sie, MD
President
Dr. Sie

Dr. Kathleen C.Y. Sie currently serves as Professor and Chief, Pediatric Otolaryngology, at the University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital, and Director, Childhood Communication Center. She is the Richard and Francine Loeb Endowed Chair in Childhood Communication Research. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Sie completed her residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington, Seattle. After a post-graduate research fellowship at the University of Washington, she completed fellowship training in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Sie was certified by the ABOHNS in 1990, subcertified in Complex Pediatric Otolaryngology in 2021, and elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2014.


C. Gaelyn Garrett, MD, MMHC
President-Elect

Gaelyn GarrettDr. C. Gaelyn Garrett currently serves as Professor and Vice-Chair of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is the Guy M. Maness Chair in Laryngology and Voice as well as the Medical Director of the Vanderbilt Voice Center. She has served as the President of The American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society (also known as the Triological Society) and the American Laryngological Association (ALA). Additionally, she is a member of the ACGME Otolaryngology Residency Review Committee. She leads and teaches local and national courses in phonosurgery, lasers, videostroboscopy, and voice care for the professional voice user. Dr. Garrett was certified by the ABOHNS in 1996 and elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2014.


Timothy L. Smith, MD, MPH
Chair, Assessments Committee

Timothy SmithDr. Timothy L. Smith is a Professor and Vice Chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon where he also serves as Director of the Oregon Sinus Center, Chief of Rhinology and Sinus-Skull Base Surgery, and Director of Clinical Research. Dr. Smith is actively involved in clinical practice and research and has served as the Principal Investigator of the first multi-institutional study of outcomes of sinus surgery funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Smith is a Past President of the American Rhinologic Society and has been elected to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum (CORLAS). Dr. Smith previously served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology. Dr. Smith was certified by the ABOHNS in 1997 and elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2016.


Sonya Malekzadeh, MD
Newly Elected Director

Sonya MalekzadehDr. Sonya Malekzadeh is Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Vice Chair for Education and Residency Program Director in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Malekzadeh previously served as the Education Coordinator for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). She is a past member of the AAO-HNS Board of Directors and was also the inaugural Chair of the Women in Otolaryngology Section. Dr. Malekzadeh is the immediate past Chair of the Otolaryngology Program Directors Organization (OPDO) and is currently President of the Society of University Otolaryngologists (SUO). Dr. Malekzadeh was the recipient of the 2017 Karen Gale Outstanding Achievement Award at Georgetown and the 2011 AAO-HNS WIO Helen F. Krause, MD Trailblazer Award, recognizing her efforts in mentoring and supporting women in medicine. Dr. Malekzadeh was certified by the ABOHNS in 2000 and elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2022.
